This course explores the potential of using molds as a tool with endless applications for functional work, sculptural work, and large-scale work. Students will learn how to make plaster molds with paper fiber to increase the strength and decrease the weight of each mold. The workshop will be a hands-on approach by making numerous 1-piece and 2-piece plaster molds from solid clay forms that will be made in session. Discussion and demonstration of using molds in multiple ways from slip casting to press-molding, texturing, altering and multiplying will be explored. More experienced mold making students will be invited to experiment with more complicated multi-component molds.

Samantha Dickie is a contemporary ceramic artist, focused on abstract sculpture and public installation. Her work explores visual narratives of the geographies of space, physical topographies, personal identity, movement and stillness. Employing various techniques in hand-building, mold-making, and wheel-throwing, her work preserves the raw, visceral quality of clay with textural surfaces on simple organic forms in multiples, or in large-scale. She has been awarded project grants from Canada Council, BC Arts Council, Alberta Foundation for the Arts, and the Yukon Arts Fund for projects that have been exhibited in public galleries across Western Canada. In addition to her studio in Victoria, her favorite place to work is when attending artist residencies nationally and abroad.
