This will be a hard working weekend making a number of masks and odd slab built objects you were not expecting to construct. There is a possibility of laughter-inducing pedagogy and supportive criticism that might, in the end, build character. Failing that, students should make some awesome hand built pieces over the two days. The instructor has a persisting love of the textured surface, so students are encouraged to bring any and all texturing devices and help turn one another on to the vast potential that clay presents. He also applauds the playful exploration of the seriously functional, (e.g. the “Norwegian Viking Ship Chicken Wing Delivery System”), while attempting to develop a respect for wildly abstract, non-functional or artistically disoriented objects.

Bio: Bob Kingsmill began making ceramic objects full time in the Okanagan Mission in 1967 and has continued to produce an extravagant variety of stoneware, raku-fired, and bronze objects. His Granville Island studio is an icon, and has welcomed visitors from around the world for 38 years. Teaching for Capilano College, Malaspina College, and Emily Carr College of Art and Design, and giving workshops, Bob has encouraged many people to engage in their creative process. His Catalogue of BC Potters, 1979, promotes potters and their craft. His masks and murals are collected world-wide. Three large bronzes hang at Vernon’s Performing Arts Center. Bob’s murals grace walls at St. Andrew’s Theological College, UBC; Vancouver’s Children’s Hospital; Vernon’s Hospice House; and Kelowna’s Community Theater.
