Alumigraph printmaking combines the possibility of multiples with the unique spontaneity of the monoprint. Alumigraph uses simple available materials, oil-based inks, papers, and the printmaking press. Images are made by collaging found objects and handmade materials onto a support sheathed in aluminum foil. Combining the result with rag and Japanese papers, chine collé, and the ”à la Poupée” inking process creates beautifully detailed, graphically direct, strong, delicate and unique hand-pulled prints. Alumigraph is a great entry into intaglio printing and a great process for exploring and developing your colour sense as you discover the expansive possibilities of this generous medium.

Alain Costaz is a visual artist living in Victoria, BC. He works in painting, printmaking and drawing. His work, centered on the human form, explores sense of place, identity, and emotional and physical landscape. Alain is a faculty instructor at Victoria College of Art, teaches at Ground Zero Printmakers Studio and for community arts classes and events. He has done workshops for regional groups such as the Canadian Federation of Artists, Fort St John, BC and teaches at the Summer Series in art at Red Deer College, Alberta. His work is represented in Victoria, Toronto and Montreal and in group shows, most recently at “Black & White Essentials”, Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, “Karta” at Peace Gallery North, Fort St John, and at “BIMPE VIII”, Biennial International Miniature Print Exhibition, Vancouver, and Edmonton.
