In this workshop students will be offered the opportunity to create a figurative clay sculpture derived from their own studies of a live model. As painters traditionally worked from sketches, sculptors have always relied on the maquette to work up their grand monuments. Following this tradition, students will first create a number of small gestural sculptures using a model for reference. During this phase students will be guided on how to observe and consider the proportion and musculature of the figure in the round. Later, students will choose one or two pieces from among their gestural studies with which to create a larger, more finished piece with the guidance and support of the instructor.

Louise Solecki Weir has always had a passion for sculpting figures and faces. She loves the tactile expressivity of clay and finds it immensely satisfying to take a lump of clay and breathe life into it. Additionally she has an interest in how art and society intersect and how art can contribute to the community through public art, psychology and forensics. Her education includes a diploma in Fine Arts from Langara College, summer school in Italy with the University of Georgia, and a BFA in Fine Arts from York University. She is a registered art therapist and her interests in mental health lead to an exploration of portraits with the mentally ill in Vancouver. She has taken master classes in portrait sculpture with the Society of Portrait Sculptors in England and in Forensic Sculpture with Karen T. Taylor in Scottsdale and at the Texas State Body Farm.
