This “one of a kind” class will unleash your creativity, using smooth plates and your imagination to create non-edition, hand-pulled prints. Considered the most painterly of printmaking methods, monotypes are made by ‘painting’ an image onto a smooth plate and then transferring this image onto printmaking paper using the pressure of an etching press. What distinguishes the monotype from a painting are the textures and effects created by unique mark-making tools, the transfer process and the pressure of the printing press. What separates it from other printmaking processes is that it produces a one of a kind image with no possibility of edition work. Series work will be explored, however, using the “ghost imagery” left on the plate for subsequent prints. This class is appropriate for students new to printmaking and with little drawing or brush painting experience, and also for printmakers wishing to expand their repertoire of tools and techniques.

Chiarina Loggia, a multi-award winning printmaker, has been pulling prints for thirteen years, exhibiting in group and solo shows around the world. She has taught printmaking and drawing from her studio and elsewhere for many years. This will be her second time teaching at MISSA, which, incidentally, is where she took her first printmaking course many years ago! The magical allure of the pulled print began then, and has never left. She describes printmaking as a labour of hope, with equal measures of control and chaos, for you are never quite sure what your image will look like until you have pulled the print. Widely collected, her distinctive prints evoke a timelessness, serenity, beauty and emotional resonance.
