Drawing inspiration from daily walks on trails and along shorelines, students will learn how to transform their observations into carved linocut, and woodcut relief blocks, and then print them by hand or by using the studio press. A break from the traditional view of landscape, this program will take a close look at shapes and patterns that are found within arm’s reach. This 7 day workshop will be held in the floating classroom on Pedder Bay with views of the water, sky and forest inviting closer explorations. Relief printing is very direct, simple, and uses materials that are relatively inexpensive. Images can be big and bold, or they can hold the delicacy of a fine line. Through step-by-step demonstrations and hands-on instruction, students will explore a variety of multiple-colour print techniques, learn to register multiple colours, explore carving styles and build a personal mark making vocabulary, and learn the wonderful possibilities of using a scroll saw to play with colours and patterns by cutting your relief blocks into several pieces. This technique is sometimes called jigsaw printmaking or jigsaw woodcut.
Individual exploration is happily encouraged and supported in this process-focused program.
